Macronutrients are mineral elements that plants need in relatively large quantities and that are essential for life:
Primary macronutrients – nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium – are usually the first to be found lacking because plants need the largest amounts of these essential minerals.
Secondary macronutrients – calcium, magnesium and sulfur – are generally present in sufficient quantities. Calcium and magnesium are also added heavily by lime, which is commonly applied to soils as a pH-balancer.
